About Us
Scoil Mhuire is a Catholic co-educational voluntary secondary school with a Catholic ethos under the trusteeship of CEIST (Catholic Education an Irish Schools’ Trust). Scoil Mhuire is based in the rural town of Strokestown, Co. Roscommon and has a student population of approximately 670 students.
The Student Enterprise Programme is a core module of the Transition Year Programme in Scoil Mhuire and the programme is now over 20 years in existence. An initiative of the Local Enterprise Office, the Student Enterprise Programme was created to promote entrepreneurship in second level schools, equipping students with the skills to set up and successfully run their own business. Since its inception twenty-two years ago, the programme has proved to be a huge success, with over 350,000 secondary school students taking part since it first began. This year alone 2023/2024, a further 25,000 students are expected to participate.
For the programme, each student “enterprise” is challenged with creating, setting up and running their own business and documenting viable sales of their service or product. In Scoil Mhuire, the school finals are held in December every year, and the five school winners then go on to represent the school in the Student Enterprise County Finals in March. The winners in each category at the county final then go forward to represent their school and county in the national finals in May. Student enterprises from every county across the country showcase their innovative business ideas at the national finals and get the opportunity to impress the judges by highlighting both the practical and life skills they have learned throughout this programme.
